Do I have sleep apnea?

Dr Chan Alfred
Sleep apnea is becoming more and more common in Hong Kong. There are now 4% of men and 2% of women diagnosed with sleep apnea each year. Patients of sleep apnea would stop breathing from time to time during their sleep, they would wake up suddenly and find it hard to get into deep sleep. This would affect their energy level during the day and work performance. In the long term, obstructive sleep apnea increases the risk of developing hypertension, heart disease, stroke and drowsiness during driving. Also, the snoring sound of sleep apnea patients would disturb the sleep of family members. Symptoms of sleep apnea include
- occasional snoring during sleep;
- sudden stop of breathing for 10 seconds to few minutes during sleep, this can wake a sleeper dozens or even hundreds of times a night;
- always feel tired and sleepy;
- morning headache;
- inability to concentrate; lack of strength, slow reaction;
- bad temper;
- sexual dysfunction and
- fading memory.
If you have any concern about your health, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
