Elderly - Faint / Collapsed


Collapsed refers to a sudden loss of consciousness, dizziness would be in advance. The most common cause in the elderly is low blood pressure. The elderly who suffers from blood circulation related disease, diabetes or heart disease, taking blood pressure or antidepressant drugs are in high risk.

5 major causes of collapsed in the elderly:

  • cerebrovascular diseases, such as stroke
  • Heart attack, cardiac arrhythmias
  • Internal or external bleeding, such as gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Side effect of drugs
  • Other diseases, such as hypothermia, diabetes complications, etc

First aid to patient:

  • Ensure adequate ventilation of environment
  • Lie down and raise the foot, in order to restore the blood flow to heart and brain
  • Loose belts and tight clothing
  • Cover the patient with blankets, avoid too cold or too hot
  • Check for signs of circulation (breathing, coughing or movement). If absent, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • If necessary, send the patient to hospital as soon as possible

Notes:

  • If collapsed due to side effect of drug, report to the doctor as soon as possible. If necessary, reduce the drug’s dosage or adjust medication
  • If collapsed due to low blood glucose level, drinking a glass of orange juice or sugar drinks
